If summer comes back this year, Tenuta Cappellina Chianti Classico will be just the wine to greet it. If autumn sets in, it will still be just the red to have in your glass.
This is a new Chianti for me and I love it. I admit to being slightly alarmed when I saw the alcohol of the 2020, but the balance of fruit and flesh with gentle grip and freshness is spot on – so much so that it’s dangerously easy to drink.
Bear that in mind, then soak up the ripe cherries, the mossy sweet-earth, clove, tobacco and dark chocolate notes and the mineral and cherry-kernel finish.
Tenuta Cappellina, in the far south of Chianti Classico, is a large organic, sustainable and biodiverse estate, but it’s a boutique-sized wine producer with only about a tenth of its nearly 95ha under vine, some of it outside the Classico area and therefore producing IGP Toscana. The Chianti Classico is essentially Sangiovese with just a little Canaiolo and it’s aged for two years in traditional large (30hl) oak casks.
Meaty and tomatoey ragùs and pasta dishes and Italian sausages are obvious matches, but there are plenty of other possibilities: steak and stews such as peposo; pork belly and wild boar stews; pasta e fagioli, pumpkin dishes, roast root vegetables and red peppers and, as long as it’s not too sharp, caponata. 15%. Empty bottle weight: 456g.
