As the last of the 10 villages to be promoted to Cru status, Beaujolais' highest quality tier, alongside the likes of Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié is probably still the least well known, but it can be an absolute gem. Witness Château de Pizay Régnié 2023.
Made from 55-year-old vines at the historic Château de Pizay estate in an outstanding vintage for Beaujolais, the 2023 is beautifully expressive, with a lustrous deep ruby-red colour and succulent cassis and strawberry fruit rippling with a light mineral undercurrent.
It's a wine with the ripeness and concentration of old vines in a great vintage and the unerring joie de vivre and energy of red Beaujolais' Gamay grape at its most seductive.
Good Beaujolais is always versatile. Château de Pizay Régnié 2023 would be a fitting bottle for the festive Christmas table and would be equally adept at coping with all the Boxing Day cold leftovers, whether turkey, goose, ham, beef or a medley of veg.
It would also come into its own with an all-embracing meze, roast duck or chicken and it could be paired with salmon, especially salmon braised in red wine or with an earthy mushroom sauce. 13.5%
