A bottle of Rngbolt Cabernet Sauvignon red wine from Margaret River, Australia

Deep purple colour, polished tannins, saline freshness, hedgerow berries and blackcurrants, bitter herbs, dark chocolate, graphite and charcoal notes: Ringbolt is a textbook example of Margaret River's pure and focused style of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Better still, it’s at a keen price for a Margaret River red, especially one in which the grapes mostly come from the premium Wilyabrup subregion, close to the Indian Ocean, and that it’s a wine that still has ageing potential. I would happily cellar it for another five years.

And it’s worth adding here that Ringbolt is a very reliable label, so if you can’t find the 2021 but can find a previous vintage, I would try it (scroll down for stockists).

In case you're wondering, the curious name comes from one of the many shipwrecks off Western Australia’s southwest coast – this one at the southern tip of the Margaret River region in a bay now called Ringbolt Bay.

Like most good Cabernet Sauvignons, this is a wine that shows best with food. It’s a natural with barbecued lamb rump, venison, beef steak (tomahawk, ribeye, bavette, onglet), accompanied, if you like, by salsa verde or a mild chimichurri , or beef straccetti with rocket and Parmesan (Rachel Roddy's recipe is good). A rare-breed pork tomahawk would work, too. But it's not a Cabernet that demands meat. Try it with aged hard cheeses, roast root vegetables and brown/green lentil dishes. 13.5%. Empty bottle weight: 534g.
