£8.75, The Wine Society

A bottle of Bico Amarelo Vinho Verde, dry white Portuguese wine

You might think from the price that this was one of the bland mass-market Vinhos Verdes, but it’s proper stuff – mouthwateringly fresh with green apple, lemon, lime and leafy green herb notes and a dry, crisp palate with the succulence of a little lees ageing. No sweetness, no carbonation, no messing about.

It’s a blend of classic Vinho Verde grape varieties, Loureiro, Alvarinho and Avesso, and comes from the Lima subregion of the Minho, 30km from the Atlantic. Quinta do Ameal is an organic, riverside estate dating from 1710, now owned by Esporão, which also makes very good wines in the Alentejo region at Herdade Esporão.

The 2024 Bico Amarelo makes an ideal aperitif, but has the character to go with food, especially fish, including shellfish, white fish, oily fish and fritto misto, and with salads such as Caprese and tricolore. I was slightly surprised by how well it went with smoked salmon (a mild cure) and it paired very well with sea bass fillets with rosemary and a light caper vinaigrette, as well as with sautéed courgettes and pea shoots with tarragon. 11.5%. Empty bottle weight: 360g.

Wow, that sounds really fresh and well-balanced! I love how you describe the green apple and citrus notes—it makes me think of the crisp feeling when you finally nail a tricky section in Geometry Dash Lite. Both are small victories that just hit perfectly!

Wow, that Albert Road Pinot Noir sounds amazing, especially for the price! 🍷 I'm definitely going to try and grab some. It makes me think about how we express things online – maybe I'll use an Emoji Translator to describe it!
