The French are currently suffering from the annual le blues de la rentrée, the collective post-vacances low spirits and malaise that hits as they return to the daily grind after the long and, for most, total summer break.
I can’t help feeling that what many of them could do with is a nose-tingling, racy, reviving dry white wine like Tingleup Riesling 2025, although I realise that the thought of it being Australian might undo any good the wine could do.
Still, my advice would be to give it ago. Tingleup, made at Howard Park winery in Western Australia's cool Great Southern region, is one of my perennial favourites and the 2025 is no exception.
It was a warm, dry growing season – fast and furious at the end – with all the white grapes, including Riesling, harvested two to three weeks ahead of the longterm average. But they were in encouragingly good shape and the resulting 2025 Tingleup Riesling is characteristically mouthwatering – dry, refreshing and pinging with lime zest and kaffir lime leaf aromas and juicy green apple and pear.
It goes very well with seafood, especially prawns, and is a good wine to pair with the spices and salads of Southeast Asia, especially Thai and Vietnamese, provided they're not fiery. Chinese can work, too, as long as you avoid dishes with obvious sweetness – this is a dry wine. It also makes an ideal aperitif. 12.5%. Empty bottle weight: 410g.
