£6.75, Tesco

A bottle of Andrew Peace Australian Chardonnay

There aren’t many places in the world where a family-owned and run winery produces Chardonnay of this quality at just £6.75, but the Peace family, now into the third generation, is one of Australian wine’s success stories.

Operating out of a winery with 180ha of vineyards close to the banks of the Murray River in Victoria, Andrew Peace Wines has become, in the space of three decades, one of the country’s top 20 family-owned wine companies and one of only 10 to sell over one million cases annually.

Masterpeace is the entry level range and Tesco sells all four wines at £6.75 (and sometimes on offer at under £6). The Chardonnay is the best in my view, followed by the Shiraz, then the Pinot Grigio and the Cabernet Sauvignon. The latter is a bit jammy, but all are well made and taste of their grape varieties.

The 2024 Chardonnay is pale, nimble, sappy and supple with tangy, sweet-lemon fruit and easygoing smoothness. Put another way, it’s light, refreshing, easy to drink, has the lightest touch of oak and tastes of Chardonnay.

Drink it as an aperitif or with light pasta, fish and chicken dishes, vegetable quiches or tempura (broccoli, courgette, aubergine), or salads, but be careful not to knock it out with an overly sharp vinaigrette. Vegan-friendly. 12%. Empty bottle weight: 398g
