Greece’s thrilling white Assyrtiko grape has rightly captured hearts and palates around the world, but it has done so partly at the expense of the country’s other high-quality, distinctive white wine varieties.
Did you see what I did there? I slipped the word ‘wine’ in at the end because the two grape varieties, Moschofilero and Roditis, that make up this wine are pink skinned, just as the far more familiar Pinot Gris/Grigio and Gewürztraminer are. In fact, pink is a catch-all for colours ranging from pale pink to copper to orange (like Roditis) to greyish, bluish and brownish.
Back to Moschofilero Roditis 2024. Part of M&S’s Found range of wines from lesser known grape varieties and regions, it's a wonderfully vibrant and fragrant dry white, with floral, lime and spice notes and a breezily refreshing, herbal, saline tang.
It’s the Muscat-like (but unrelated) Moschofilero, grown high up in Arcadia in the Peloponnese and accounting for nearly 80 per cent of the blend, that gives the wine its lilting, aromatic character. The more citrusy Roditis comes from mountainous north-facing slopes in Achaia to the north and the wine is made at the Kintonis Winery in Achaia by Moschofilero master Leonidas Nassiakos.
It makes a perfect aperitif but also pairs well with prawns and other crustaceans, sushi and dishes such as whipped feta with harissa, toasted hazelnuts and parsley, caramelised shallots with pomegranate molasses, classic Greek salads and other salads with tomato.
