A bottle of Vasse Felix Margaret River Classic White, an Australian dry white wine

If you’re not completely sold on Sauvignon Blanc, or not at this time of year when it can feel a bit bracing, try Vasse Felix Classic White instead. It’s one third Sauvignon Blanc and two thirds Semillon in the classic white-grape pairing of Western Australia's Margaret River region.

Putting the two varieties together delivers the refreshing vibrancy and zing of Sauvignon but with less bite and more roundness and succulence – and, in the 2025, lime zest, peach and lemongrass with a wisp of smoky herb adding a savoury note.

Vinification is entirely in stainless steel with selected organic and aromatic yeasts producing a dry white wine of pristine fruit and freshness. The harvest was all over by 7 March and the wine – vegan friendly – was bottled in June.

Here's the Vasse Felix story in a nutshell. It was the founding winery in Margaret River in 1967 and has made Classic White since 1987 (expect some celebrations next year). For the last two decades the winemaker has been Virginia Willcock who is the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year. Bravo!

To go with the white, there’s an equally good Classic Red, which in 2025 is a cassis and graphite-accented Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec blend, where previously it’s been a Shiraz. And there are stellar Vasse Felix Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons – more expensive but excellent value.

Serve Classic White 2025 as an aperitif or pair it with seafood, especially garlicky, spicy prawns or prawn spaghetti (with parsley, lemon and a little chilli), or try pasta with broccoli, peas and ricotta, vegetarian spring rolls, sushi (but light on the wasabi), or lemony, griddled chicken. 12.5%. Empty bottle weight: 422g.
