WINE OF THE WEEK: Ide Alcalde Pinot Noir 2024, Sonoma County, California, US
£17.30–£19.30, Tanners Wines
There’s no shortage of good Pinot Noir in California. What there’s a dearth of is California Pinot Noir that’s good value by the time it reaches UK wine drinkers, which makes Ide Alcalde Pinot Noir 2024 from Sonoma County a rarity: it’s not just good value, it’s great value – even more so at £17.30 when you buy two or more bottles.
From the aromas of rose, Earl Grey tea and baking spices to the fine-tuned cherry and cranberry fruit, the savoury undertone, polished texture and breezy freshness, it's a model expression of grape variety and origin.
It’s made by Sonoma Bespoke, a custom wine bottling service based in Napa Valley, which doesn’t sound very romantic but it has a reputation for high-quality – borne out by this wine and its Chardonnay partner, Ide El Verano (same vintage, same price at Tanners) – and has a commitment to sustainable practices.
The founder and CEO of the company, Max Franks, is a native of Hertfordshire and the chairman, Donny Sebastiani, is the great grandson of the Italian Samuele Sebastiani who started making wine in Sonoma in the early 1900s.
Serve Ide Alcade Pinot Noir 2024 cool and pair it with things such as dry-cured ham and smoked duck breast (magret fumé), mushroom dishes such as porcini with pasta, duck breasts (for example, with pomegranate and mint or Zuza Zak’s recipe with redcurrants and roast pumpkin in her book Amber & Rye), fish such as salmon, red mullet and meaty sea bream, lightly spiced sautéed or roast aubergine and roast poultry. Or serve it as a red wine aperitif. 12.5%.

The point about California Pinot Noir rarely being good value once it reaches the UK really resonates, since import costs and duty often erase any advantage. It's interesting that a custom bottling service rather than an estate is behind this one, which raises a question: does that model give more flexibility on pricing and sourcing, or does it make consistency harder to guarantee across vintages? At 12.5% it also sounds lighter than many Sonoma Pinots, which could explain the freshness described.

Late to this but grabbed mine here for a staff away day. It filled the themed word list for me, answer key came with it, no account. Took less time than finding the room booking.
