WINE OF THE WEEK: Altano Rewilding Edition Tinto 2022, Douro, Portugal

Before I settled on this Douro red, I had two other Symington Family Estates wines on my radar for this week: the white and the red Quinta da Fonte Souto Florão from the Symington estate in the Alentejo. I’m still recommending both, especially the white, but when I spotted that you could get Altano Rewilding Edition Tinto for as little as £6.56, it was too good to miss.
And you will miss out if you’re not quick. To get the lowest price, the wine has to be delivered by Monday 2 November. You also need a Clubcard (you can download a digital one and use it immediately) and you have to buy six or more bottles of any wines in the ‘save 25%’ offer. There are plenty to choose from.
For the record, the Florão wines are currently on a similar ‘save 25%’ offer in Ocado, which brings the white down to £11.25 and the red to £11.81 (from £15 and £15.75, respectively). You have to order by 3 November, but delivery can be after that.
Back to Altano Rewilding Edition Tinto 2022, a Douro worth buying at its full price of £11.25 if you miss the offers. It’s made from the region’s three most planted grape varieties, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, some of them growing at high elevations to give freshness and nicely rounded structure to the wild berry and violet fragrance and the elderberry and damson fruit streaked with aromatic herbal notes (think thyme and rosemary).
The Rewilding part of the name refers to the pioneering conservation work being carried out by Rewilding Portugal in a 120,000-hectare wildlife corridor in northern Portugal. Every bottle bought makes a financial contribution.
Altano Rewilding 2022 goes well with red meat, including venison and pork, and is good with arroz de pato, the Portuguese dish of duck, rice and chouriço (similar to chorizo), but this isn't a meat-needy wine. It goes well with hard cheeses such as aged Parmesan, Ossau Iraty and Manchego, with baked spiced root vegetables, aubergine and fennel, spiced lentil dishes and with empanadas. And in Portugal I would drink it with hearty salt cod (bacalhau) dishes such as bacalhau à Gomes de Sá. 13%. Vegan. Empty bottle weight: 435g.
