WINE OF THE WEEK: Domaine l'Ancienne Cure Jour de Fruit Bergerac Sec 2022, France

£16.15, Yapp Brothers

The Roche family are better known for their Domaine l'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac but they have long produced very good dry white and red Bergerac on their 40-ha organic estate close to the village of Monbazillac in the Dordogne.

Jour de Fruit Sec is an unoaked blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon from the very hot and dry summer of 2022. It was not a vintage that looked equally favourably on all growers, but fifth and sixth generation Nathalie and Julie, helped by Julie’s partner (owner of the neighbouring château), took full advantage of the sunshine to make a beautifully sunny wine.

Fragrant with sweet citrus fruit, fresh hay and herbs, it’s generous on the palate with rich candied-lemon fruit and a refreshing twist of grapefruit on the finish.

It’ll be good to drink all this year, either as an aperitif or paired with things such as seafood, lemon and ricotta pasta, pumpkin ravioli, banitsa, chicken and avocado salad, or chicken in a creamy, lemony sauce. 14.5%. Empty bottle weight: 513g.
