Perfect for summer, perfect for watching Wimbledon: a textbook example of Austria’s signature grape variety, Grüner Veltliner.
The 2023 is dry, sprightly and medium-bodied with juicy nectarine, fresh herb and celery-leaf notes made all the more enticing by a characteristic twist of white pepper, a lightly mineral finish and a mid-palate filled out by brief ageing on the lees.
It comes from one of the country's best white wine producers, Domäne Wachau – a co-operative, no less – where the grapes are hand-picked in the Wachau region's steep, terraced vineyards overlooking the Danube and the vines are sustainably cultivated without the use of insecticides or herbicides.
Grüner Veltliner Katzensprung Federspiel is refreshing enough for warm weather, substantial enough for cooler days and makes a very good aperitif. But Grüner is also versatile with food, which is worth remembering when you’re in a restaurant looking for a wine to suit several dishes and diners.
It can handle some spice and acidity, goes well with cured fish and fried fish (including fritto misto and fish and chips), with vegetable tempura, Thai vegetable spring rolls, asparagus or risi et bisi, as well as with Weiner schnitzel. Among Domäne Wachau’s suggestions are classic Austrian dishes such as pasta ham bake, which sounds good, or roasted brains with eggs. I’ll leave that one with you. 12.5%.
