This is wonderfully vibrant and refreshing, but with subtle richness, too – and it's from a category that isn’t well known enough in the UK: dry white Bordeaux.
Everyone knows red Bordeaux and everyone knows about the region’s sweet wines, Sauternes, even if they don’t drink them (which is a pity), but Bordeaux’s dry white wines have always hovered under the radar.
Admittedly, there is far less white Bordeaux than red (barely 12% of the vineyards are planted with white grape varieties), but there is still way more white Bordeaux produced than Sancerre.
Why mention Sancerre? Because Château Roquefort Les Roches Blanches 2025 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and unoaked. If you like white Sancerre, you are sure to like this (and its more modest price), although that’s not to say that white Bordeaux and Sancerre are interchangeable.
Bordeaux has its own take on Sauvignon Blanc, especially when it’s grown, as Les Roches Blanches is, in the kind of limestone soils that the variety loves and which bring out the pristine purity and essence of Sauvignon Blanc. In this case, the vines – 20 years old on average – are in chalky-clay with outcrops of fossilised oyster beds.
The nose-tinglingly green-fruit and grassy fresh aromas of Les Roches Blanches 2025 take you into a palate of lovely succulence and roundness, with ripe greengage and gooseberry fruit, lime-zest zing and mouthwatering minerality.
It’s an excellent aperitif, but do take it with you to the table, especially if you’re having ceviche, seafood or fish of more or less any kind (I had it with skate with capers and brown butter and with sea bream). It also pairs well with vegetables and vegetable dishes, including asparagus, courgette and pea fritters, broad beans, broccoli, bell peppers and tomatoes (I know, fruit not vegetable). 13%. Empty bottle weight: 475g.

I was searching for something quick to play during breaks and found Drive Mad online. The short levels make it easy to jump in for a few minutes.
