WINE OF THE WEEK: Heavenly Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Côtes de Gascogne

£5.99, Wine Rack and Bargain Booze

I wasn’t planning to wax lyrical about a Sauvignon Blanc this week. I’d been thinking along the lines of big, chunky reds to go with robust, warming casseroles, but this Sauvignon came along and it has such revitalising elderflower, passion fruit and pink grapefruit flavour that I can’t resist choosing it. Plus, it’s a bargain! It’s from the gentle, rolling Gascon hills in south west France, a haven of ultra-light, fresh whites, but because it’s pure Sauvignon Blanc it has more fragrance and intensity than the average and is a good match for January’s, herby, spicy grains, salads and seafoods, as well as for the natural sweetness of onion tarts, root veg and squash. Gratifyingly, it’s also only 11.5% alcohol.

If you need a red to partner it, there’s a fruity, round, liquoricey Heavenly Malbec 2014 – same price, same stockists, 13% abv.
